History

Calvin E. J. Wilson is the Principal of Calvin Wilson and Associates, a London based Consulting Firm, established in July 2018, with a branch office in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, consisting of a team of Regional and International Legal, Financial and Law Enforcement, Tax, Communications, Marketing and other Experts, which provides Strategy and Public Affairs services to clients in both the public and private sectors;

Calvin Wilson and Associates was established in the spirit of continuing its Principal’s twenty years of service to the Caribbean Basin Region and the global community, as Immediate Past Executive Director of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) and has developed a Regional Work Programme with Recommendations and country specific Action Plans in relation to the eleven initiatives, that are impacting the region and which have significant implications for the objectives and timelines for the successful establishment of the CARICOM Single Market and Economics (CSME).

Calvin Wilson and Associates through its Principal’s extensive regional and global network is also currently engaged with international technology private sector partners to design modern, cutting edge, information technology tools and platforms, which will revolutionize the current approach to the global compliance function, that has unfolded over the past thirty years, to the benefit of the Caribbean Basin Region and the world.

Calvin E. J. Wilson

Mr. Calvin Wilson’s academic and professional qualifications, together with his considerable specialist experience, give him a unique profile, perspective and voice in the dynamic and ever changing regional and global Anti Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) compliance landscape.

Mr. Wilson is a Barrister, United Kingdom, Attorney at Law, Trinidad and Tobago and holds a Bachelor of Laws, University of London and a Master of Laws specializing in International Finance from the London School of Economics.

He has the strong and decisive management and negotiating skills of a former commercial Banker, Senior Crown Prosecutor, Advisor to Law Enforcement at New Scotland Yard and a Caribbean Basin Region Diplomat with twenty years’ experience on the frontline of diplomacy, politics and policy formulation for protecting the international financial system from money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

Mr. Wilson has an unmatched and unparalleled global profile, having had lead responsibility for developing and implementing the regional strategy for monitoring compliance with international standards on AML/CFT, as Deputy Executive Director (1year) and Executive Director (19 years) of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF), and managing the Second, Third and part of the Fourth Round of Mutual Evaluations,

He is well versed in the inner workings of the global AML/CFT network consisting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the nine FATF Style Regional Bodies, having attended over a twenty (20) year period, at least sixty-one (61), or all but two (2) FATF Plenary/Working Group and Intersessional Meetings since 1998.

Mr. Wilson also has the distinction of having been the longest serving Executive Secretary in the global network (19 years), and the accolade of assisting either directly or by sharing his experiences and expertise, towards the formation and development of two FATF Style Bodies in Eastern and Southern Africa and Latin America.

An astute observer of global politics, economics and finance, Mr. Wilson fully understands and has extensive knowledge and experience in the strategic imperatives of the G7, G20, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Financial Action Task Force, which allow discernment of trends in the global agenda and facilitates the provision of cogent, effective, confidential and strategic advice at the highest political and private sector levels.

Mr. Wilson is a clear, confident and credible communicator with extensive experience with the international media, and exceptional crisis management skills, honed over the last twenty years, particularly at the height of the negative listings of regional countries by international organizations.

He is an accomplished and in demand global advocate who plays an important role in the public and private sectors, undertaking advocacy and public diplomacy to engender awareness, deepen understanding on global compliance issues, and to secure moral and financial support at the highest political, diplomatic and corporate levels, both regionally and globally in service of the best interests of the Caribbean Basin Region.

At the May 2018 CFATF Plenary meeting Mr., Wilson was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for “Your significant contribution and dedicated service to the CFATF”

Trevor Mendez

Mr. Trevor Mendez has worked in the fields of Money Laundering Compliance, Taxation, and Financial Crime Investigations and Enforcement for over twenty-five years in both Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. His training includes degrees in Law and Economics, and internationally recognized certifications in Anti-Money Laundering, Fraud Examination, Investigation and Law Enforcement, and Forensic Sciences specializing in Economic Crime. He has also received training from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Capital Market Development and Regulation. As well, he is an AML/CFT Country Assessor certified by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force.

Mr. Mendez assisted in the development of the AML/CFT policy of Trinidad and Tobago’s in his role as representative of the sector’s Supervisory Authority on the National Anti-Money Laundering Committee and its Supervisory Working Group. He also wrote the Capital Sector’s segment of the National AML/CFT Risk Assessment and facilitated the development of its Action Plan in response to the country’s AML the risks and vulnerabilities identified in the National Risk Assessment. As well, he represented the sector in the Mutual Evaluation of Trinidad & Tobago. Further to this, he participated in the preparation of new Guidelines for the sector, and the development of both the process and criteria for the licencing of Compliance Officers.

Mr. Mendez presented training in Financial Investigation to Investigatory bodies and Association in Canada. He has also provided training to the Financial Investigations Bureau of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission and in the legal sector. He has also held Outreach sessions and acted as subject matter expert for the nation’s Capital sector on AML/CFT
